The heathers are creeping undershrubs belonging to the family of the ericaceae. Winter heathers (Erica carnea and Erica (x) darleyensis) are the most commonly planted species. They are easy to grow, and the Erica carnea flowers in the winter, usually in February-March, despite the cold. These very hardy plants can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) without any problems. They come in white, red, pink, and violet, depending on the variety. Heathers can grow in both shade and sun and are highly resistant to cold, dry winds. They also tolerate summer drought well. They require acidic to neutral soil and do not tolerate limestone or heavy, wet soils in winter.
