Some ferns are suited to calcareous soils. Less numerous than the classic woodland species, they are all the more valuable in the garden. They thrive in shady rock gardens, dry-stone walls, clear woodland and rocky soils. Evergreen or deciduous, these perennials add a touch of greenery to less floriferous areas.
Asplenium scolopendrium 'Undulatum, or hart's tongue fern, is a reliable choice for calcareous soil. Its long, entire fronds, with a glossy green colour, have a simple and elegant appearance. Smaller, Asplenium ceterach and Asplenium trichomanes are happy with a handful of potting compost between stones or in the joints of an old wall. Polypodium vulgare, Dryopteris filix-mas, Polystichum setiferum and Polystichum aculeatum are also well suited to clear woodland and shady beds in neutral to calcareous soil.
These ferns complement hellebores, cyclamens, variegated ivies and other small shade-loving perennials.
