Common jasmine (Jasminum officinale) is a climbing plant renowned for its white flowers with a sweet fragrance. It has produced several varieties and hybrids with decorative foliage or more colourful flowers. It can be used to adorn pergolas, trellises, and fences. This twining climber can be more or less deciduous, reaches 3 to 6 m in height with a spread of 1.5 to 3 m and flowers from June to September.
Among the most well-known, 'Aureum' displays golden foliage that highlights its clusters of white stars. 'Clotted Cream' features creamy yellow corollas. 'Affinis' is adorned with large, very fragrant white flowers and offers particularly abundant flowering in warm conditions. Also worth mentioning is Jasminum x stephanense, a natural hybrid between common jasmine and J. beesianum with pink, fragrant flowers.
Common jasmine has flexible growth, is easily trained, and prefers ordinary, well-drained soils, even slightly calcareous and dry in summer. It thrives in full sun or light partial shade; its hardiness ranges from –12 to –15 °C depending on the variety.
Plant in spring or autumn in enriched, well-drained soil, and water regularly for the first two years.
