Our Range of Purple-Leaved Elders. These elders bring a magnificent touch of colour to the garden, thanks to their dark foliage and pastel spring flowering. Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace' (Eva) captivates with its finely cut, almost black, purple foliage, accompanied by pale pink flowers. Sambucus nigra 'Cherry Lace' offers bright purplish-red foliage and umbels of pinkish flowers. The 'Straight Laced' variety with its upright habit and dark purple leaves, creates an elegant and colourful vertical silhouette. Truly dark Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty' (Gerda) combines deep purple foliage and fragrant pale pink flowers.

Easy to grow and very hardy, elders require little maintenance. Plant them in sun or partial shade, in a half potting compost/half garden soil mix. Prune hard in early spring to allow branch renewal, but maintain a minimum of old shoots, as flowering will occur on unpruned shoots.
