Golden-leaved heathers include Calluna and Erica with evergreen foliage in shades of pale yellow, golden green and intense gold. These perennial shrubs are perfect for brightening rock gardens, borders, banks and containers. Plant them in well-drained soil in a bright position.

On Calluna vulgaris 'Wickwar Flame', the orangey bronze of spring gives way to golden yellow in summer, then turns red with the cold. Erica × darleyensis 'Eva Gold' turns golden in summer and bears magenta bells from December to March. The variety 'Stieneke' has golden foliage that turns soft green, followed by pink flowers in winter. More spreading, Erica carnea 'Golden Starlet' displays bright foliage and white flowers in autumn and winter.

In a border, place a few tree heaths behind these low cushions to create different heights. If your soil is neutral or chalky, choose lime-tolerant heathers. To find out everything you need to know, read our complete guide "Heathers: planting, pruning and caring for them" .
