Griselinia littoralis, also known as New Zealand Broadleaf or English Laurel, is an evergreen bush native to New Zealand and ideal for coastal gardens. With its shimmering apple green foliage, rapid growth, and dense habit, it is very resistant to summer drought and salt spray, making it one of the most popular choices for creating windbreak hedges along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. It has a highly fragrant spring flowering. Although hardy down to -10°C (14°F), this bush prefers a sheltered position away from dry and cold winds, and is best grown in a pot that can be protected during winter in regions with mild climates. In our latitudes, it will not exceed 3m (10ft) in height and 2.50m (8ft) in width, and will remain even smaller when grown in a pot. Only the female plants bear fruits, as it is a dioecious species and requires the presence of a nearby male plant.

Griselinias adapt well to all well-drained ordinary soils, but prefer a light, humus-rich, deep soil with minimal limestone content and good moisture retention. Once established, it is highly resistant to drought. It thrives in sunny or partially shaded positions in hot climates as it flowers more abundantly in full sun.
