Our selection of Curcuma, exotic perennial rootstock plants with multiple attractions. Curcuma, from the ginger family, stands out for its lush foliage and upright flower spikes with colorful bracts. It is cultivated both for its ornamental appeal and for its spicy rootstocks used in cooking and herbal medicine.

Curcuma longa, the Curry plant, is famous for its yellow rootstocks with aromatic and medicinal properties. Its tender green foliage and pale yellow flowers make it a beautiful houseplant to grow in pots in our climate. More ornamental, Curcuma alismatifolia, or Siam Tulip, offers a summer flowering, decorative and fragrant. The ‘Pink’ variety displays elegant pink bracts, while ‘White’ showcases stunning pure white inflorescences, elegant and luminous.

The Curcuma genus belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, like ginger and Greater Galangal. It includes more than 100 species native to South and Southeast Asia. These rootstock plants develop ensate foliage and large flower spikes made up of colorful bracts, often mistaken for the actual flowers.

Curcuma thrives in partial shade to sunny exposure, in rich, well-drained soil. In cold climate, its rootstocks must be overwintered away from frost. Regular watering during the growth period promotes abundant flowering.
