Daphne is a hardy bush with delicate white or pink flowering that exudes an exceptional fragrance. Depending on the varieties, Daphnes can reach a height of 1 metre (3 feet). They have dark green foliage and tubular flowers with 4 lobes. Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata', with evergreen foliage, is the most fragrant. It has variegated leaves, while the deciduous Daphne mezereum blooms as early as February. Slow-growing, Daphnes are planted in rich, moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil in shaded or partially shaded areas. They are sensitive to stagnant moisture and high temperatures. Pruning is unnecessary and can even be harmful. Daphnes pair well with heathers to protect the base from heat and summer drought.

You'll adore them!
