Chamaecyparis is a word derived from Greek meaning 'in the shape of a cypress'; while the resemblance to the latter is evident, the distinction is made by the position of the foliage in a plane, in a fan shape, and by the smaller size of the cones. Chamaecyparis are evergreen conifers belonging also to the Cupressaceae family, but they are mostly native to cool and moist northern regions of North America and eastern Asia. They are not demanding of the type of soil, as long as it is moist. And while they prefer ground which is fertile and rich in humus, they can also adapt to less favourable soils with more moderate growth.
