The Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is an annual legume that is sown in spring directly in the ground and produces small pods containing one to two peas in summer. They are rich in proteins and widely used in cooking. This traditional variety is appreciated for its fleshy seeds and simple cultivation. The Organic Chickpea is identical, but comes from organic farming. The 'Pascia' Organic variety stands out for its productivity and the regular quality of its light grains.
Chickpeas thrive in light, well-drained and poor soil in full sun. Direct sow in rows or in blocks, after the last spring frosts. The plant tolerates drought very well once well established.
With a growing cycle of 3 to 4 months, chickpeas are generally harvested in summer or early autumn. They also help enrich the soil with nitrogen (like green manures), thanks to the symbiotic action of their roots with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. They will find a place both in a family vegetable garden and in a productive garden. Follow our guide And what if you grew chickpeas?
