Sages for dry ground are sun-loving plants that tolerate drought once well-established. These plants grow in light, stony, free-draining or chalky soils, and dislike stagnant moisture in winter. They are suitable for dry gardens, borders, banks, rock gardens and scree gardens.

Small-leaved shrubby sages such as Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ or Blue Note’ are particularly interesting in gardens subject to dry summers. They form a soft bush that blooms for several months and offers a beautiful palette of colours. Among the botanical species are Salvia isochroma, formerly Salvia chamaedryoides var. isochroma, with silvery-grey foliage and small bright blue flowers. More demanding in terms of drainage, Salvia pachyphylla, the desert sage, should be reserved for rock gardens, dry banks and well-drained Mediterranean gardens.

In a garden which is not watered, in poor or stony soil, salvias combine naturally with many Mediterranean perennials, but also with rockroses and caryopteris. For further reading, also consult our guide " Shrubby sages: planting and care tips ".
