Yellow coneflowers are sun-loving perennials grown for their large, daisy-like flower heads and their generous summer flowering. They bring life to borders, beds, and large containers with their shades of golden yellow, lemon yellow, or orange-yellow. Perfectly hardy, they thrive in well-drained, fairly rich soil.
Historically less common than pink or purple, yellow is now well represented among coneflowers, from botanical species to recent horticultural varieties. It can be bright, warm, or softer depending on the variety. Echinacea paradoxa, a botanical species with golden-yellow flowers, fine, trailing rays around a dark brown cone, has a very natural look. Echinacea purpurea 'Espinoso Yellow', on the other hand, offers large golden-yellow flowers with an orange-brown centre atop sturdy stems, ideal for borders and flower arrangements alike. The variety 'Lakota Yellow', well-branched, with bright yellow flowers that fade over time, provides a lovely gradation of shades on a single clump. More unusual, 'Secret Glow' produces fully double flowers, golden yellow to orange-yellow, shaped like bristly pompons.
