The spreading bamboos, like Phyllostachys, are known for their rapid growth. Impressive, they reach up to 8 metres (26 feet) in height for Phyllostachys bissetii, thus offering a very architectural dimension to the garden. Elegant, they often have remarkable, highly graphic canes (like the superb Black bamboo) and beautiful evergreen foliage. Low maintenance, they are very hardy. Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
