Perennial Marjoram (Garden Marjoram or Shell Marjoram) and wild Marjoram (or Oregano) are culinary plants grown in herb gardens for the flavour and strong fragrance of their foliage. The seeds germinate after 10 days from sowing in pots or divided trays in warm conditions. The young plants can be transferred to the ground as soon as the soil is sufficiently warm. Marjoram varieties thrive in dry soil and their flowering is a sensory delight in summer. Garden Marjoram is not very hardy whereas Oregano (wild Marjoram) can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F).
