Description

Erica carnea 'Isabell' is a variety of Winter Heather whose very dark foliage perfectly highlights a generous pure white flowering. This shrub is bushy and compact and has a major asset: its long flowering brightens the garden from late autumn to spring. Particularly hardy, it prefers chalky soils and dappled sunlight. Ideal for ground cover between shrubs or in rockeries.

Erica carnea 'Isabell' belongs to the Ericaceae family. It is one of the many descendants of Erica carnea native to the limestone Alps. The plant forms an undershrub with a low, spreading habit, heavily branched, measuring 25 cm (9.8 in) in height and 40 cm to 50 cm (15.7 in to 19.7 in) in width. Its growth is quite slow, with a lifespan of about fifteen years. Throughout most of the winter and until early spring, from November-December to March, it presents delicate small urn-shaped flowers of pure white, with prominent stamens and contrasting bronze punctuation. The bells are arranged in clusters 5 cm to 10 cm (2 in to 3.9 in) long at the ends of leafy stems. The flowering is nectar-rich, providing a valuable source of pollen and nectar for bees in early spring. The evergreen foliage consists of small, narrow, upright, dark green leaves, sometimes tinged with brown.

Erica carnea 'Isabell' will find its place as ground cover at the base of deciduous or evergreen shrubs, which it appreciates for their light shade. It can also be used in rockeries, in the company of alpine plants. It can be cultivated both in urban and rural areas. Counted among the best garden plants, you can place it as a standalone specimen, but also in a heather garden, in flower beds, and in pots.

While heathers, especially the genus Erica, are often associated with the wet Atlantic heathlands of Brittany, Ireland, or Scotland, there are also heathers adapted to dry climates and limestone soils, such as those found in Mediterranean regions. However, one of the richest areas for heathers is located far away, in South Africa. In the Cape region, there is a vegetation formation on acidic soil, similar to Mediterranean scrub vegetation, called Fynbos, which includes nearly 625 heather species out of the 740 species that exist worldwide.

Planting and care

It prefers soil that is not too rich in organic matter. It adapts very well to poor terrains. However, the soil should be light, sandy, slightly acidic, neutral to limestone, moist but well drained. Plant in autumn or spring, without burying the collar too much. This plant appreciates non-burning full sun or partial shade. During the first two years, carefully weed around the base. Adapted to dry environments, the roots of this heather are highly ramified in the soil and, once well established, prevent the establishment of other species nearby. In case of prolonged drought, mulch the base to maintain some moisture. Erica can be susceptible to phytophthora (root rot), pythium, and rhizoctonia during hot and humid periods.
