Tall rose bushes are excellent shrubs with flowers that structure the garden. Unlike climbing roses, these roses do not require support. They form vigorous bushes, exceeding 1.50m in height, to be used at the back of borders, in informal hedges or woodland. These robust roses are characterised by their ample habit, their abundant flowering and, for some, decorative foliage or a strong fragrance.
One of the most popular is the old rose 'Sally Holmes', a large, flexible bush with healthy foliage, covered all summer with large, single, cream-white flowers with a yellow centre. The rugosa rose 'Roseraie de l'Haÿ', with a vigorous and dense habit, bears very fragrant, large, double flowers of deep crimson and is often used in defensive hedges.
Among the botanical roses, Rosa hugonis, the yellow Chinese rose, offers a light flowering of small sulphur-yellow corollas in spring, borne on finely cut foliage. 'Complicata', with a spreading habit, produces a profusion of large single pink flowers with golden stamens in summer, very popular with pollinators. Rosa glauca charms with its purplish foliage and small, single, pale pink flowers, followed by pretty, decorative red fruits. The Damask rose 'Ispahan', well known for its strong fragrance, forms a dense and floriferous bush in June, with very double, light pink roses.
Roses appreciate a sunny exposure and a deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Regular watering for the first two years is recommended, as well as light pruning at the end of winter to contain their development and promote flowering.
