The Spring Onion, Scallion, or Welsh Onion is an aromatic and culinary plant cultivated for its bulb and leaves with a milder taste than that of onion or shallot. This aromatic plant has a habit of forming clumps and has hollow, cylindrical leaves. A plant that thrives in sunny and semi-shaded areas, it flourishes in moderately rich soils. This small perennial is cultivated for two to three years after which it becomes exhausted. In the garden, position it near parsnips and celery which it protects from the carrot fly. Rich in antioxidants, minerals, and vitamin B, the Spring Onion is widely used in Asian or Caribbean cuisine.
