Our selection of indoor Selaginellas. Excellent plants for humid terrariums, these tropical varieties help recreate a lush mini ecosystem. One exception, however: the Selaginella lepidophylla, also known as the Rose of Jericho, a desert species that "resurrects" after a period of drought. But the other varieties are just as fascinating! The Selaginella martensii, with its finely divided foliage, is a delicate and airy tropical young plant. The Selaginella kraussiana ‘Aurea’, with its golden-green hue, brightens up any terrarium, while the Selaginella uncinata offers stunning metallic blue reflections.
These plants belong to the Selaginellaceae family and mostly grow in the humid tropical forests of Asia, America, and Africa. They remain small in size (10 to 30 cm) and form a dense tapetum, perfect for confined environments like terrariums.
Tropical Selaginellas thrive in consistently moist substrate, high ambient humidity, and filtered light. They do particularly well in a closed terrarium, where humidity remains constant. Outside a terrarium, they should be misted regularly to prevent drying out.
