The Campions are herbaceous plants, perennial or annual like the White Campion Silene latifolia, belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. They are cousins of carnations as shown by their small fringed white or pink petals. Campions are hardy and undemanding plants originating from Europe that require very little maintenance. Similar to the Silene schafta Splendens, a lovely ground cover that is covered in multiple small pink flowers throughout summer, they add color to walls, edges of pathways, and rockeries. The genus Silene encompasses numerous species, including Cucubalus, Lychnis, Melandryum, and Viscaria. Some campions can be found growing wild in France, often as ground-covering plants that thrive in rocky environments and on limestone soils. Therefore, they are ideally suited for use in rockeries, stone walls, and crevices in gardens. Consider pairing campions with dwarf asters and moss phlox to extend the flowering season. These hassle-free little plants also make great additions to terraces or balconies when planted in flower pots.
