Calluna vulgaris Marlies - Heather

Calluna vulgaris 'Marlies' is a summer heather forming a low bush, covered with flowers of a beautiful ruby red from August to September. It remains beautiful even in winter when other plants are dormant.

Originally from the heathlands of Europe, Calluna vulgaris 'Marlies' forms a ground cover, 30 cm (11.8 in) in height and 40 cm to 60 cm (15.7 in to 23.6 in) in width. Its flowers are composed of ruby red spikes that bloom from mid-summer to early winter. Its seeds are few in number. The dark green leaves are opposite, small and linear in the form of small scales. 'Marlies' is a popular choice with beekeepers thanks to its nectar, which is composed of 25% sugar.

Resistant up to -15° C (5° F), Calluna vulgaris 'Marlies' thrives in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Plant it in light, humus-bearing, rich and slightly acidic soil.

Use it as ground cover with other heather plants.
