Great masterworts, or Astrantia major, are hardy perennials for moist soil, useful in the garden for flowering from late spring to summer. They enjoy partial shade, tolerate sun if the soil remains moist, and slip easily into borders, at the foot of deciduous shrubs or in a naturalistic garden. Their umbels, surrounded by pearly bracts, hold well in fresh or dried flower arrangements.
We offer many varieties, including Astrantia major ‘Shaggy’ with large white flowers washed with pink and green, 'Super Star’, with white umbels tipped with green that flower for a long time, and ‘Roma’, a reliable choice with pale pink bracts around a darker centre. Also consider ‘Moulin Rouge’ and its dark red to purple flowers, very beautiful against dark green foliage.
Great masterworts combine well with hardy geraniums, lady's mantles and ferns. To succeed with them, consult our guide "Masterwort: planting, care and combining in the garden"; to create a balanced border, our article "Masterwort: 8 ideas for pairing with other plants" gives useful pointers, without losing sight of the essentials: give them a good humus-rich soil that does not dry out too much in summer.
