In mountain climates, plants are subjected to harsh conditions: the winter cold, sometimes icy, is complemented by a fairly short and rather cool season that leaves little time for vegetation to develop. Snow can also sometimes completely cover plants for a few days or... a few weeks. Here, you will find many conifers (more competitive at higher altitudes than leafy trees), such as the famous Nordmann Fir extensively used as a Christmas tree, or the European Larch, emblematic of alpine landscapes. You will also find many dwarf and prostrate shrubs, such as Daphne mezereum (the Mezereon) or Salix helvetica (the Swiss Willow): another adaptation to the harshness of the peaks.
