Red-flowered sedums or stonecrops are succulent perennials whose flowerheads turn carmine, purplish red or wine red. Their summer or autumn flowering is visited by pollinating insects. These hardy stonecrops grow in sun, in well-drained soil, even if it is poor, dry or chalky. Plant them in a rockery or bed.

'Red Cauli' is one of the most distinctly red varieties: its carmine flowers open above blue-grey foliage on a low clump about 25 cm tall. Taller, Sedum spectabile 'Carmen' bears broad flowerheads that change from dark pink to purplish red. On 'Herbstfreude', the flowers develop from rich pink to wine red, then turn brown in late autumn.

Creeping or mat-forming sedums are particularly well suited to low walls, paving and low rockeries. Botanical sedums offer the chance to discover species with more varied foliage and habits.  Our guide "Sedum or Stonecrop: which variety should you choose?" will help you make your selection.
