Campanulas grow in dry and arid soils to wet and heavy soils depending on the species. They are herbaceous and perennial plants (sometimes biennial) and are recognizable by their bell-shaped flowers, upright or trailing, blue, pink or white depending on the varieties. From the very tall Campanula latiflora which reaches over 1.50m (5ft), to the very small Stella bellflower, which barely exceeds 20cm (8in) in height, the diversity is significant in this genus, which includes hundreds of species distributed across the globe.
