Sedum, or stonecrops, with purple foliage are succulent perennials whose leaves range from bronze, burgundy, red and chocolate to almost black. Highly drought-resistant, they grow in sun in well-drained soil, even if it is poor or stony. Upright varieties flower from late summer into autumn, while creeping forms cover rockeries and dry banks.

'Purple Emperor' forms a clump about 40 cm across, with purplish leaves and rosy-red flowers. Darker, 'Black Knight' bears glossy, almost black foliage, topped with pinkish-red inflorescences in September. 'Dark Magic' stands out for its compact growth and purple-brown leaves, which set off its raspberry-pink flowering. 'Chocolate Cherry' combines chocolate-burgundy foliage with clusters of pale pink flowers from August onwards.
