The Holly Fern, or Cyrtomium falcatum is a very decorative fern, native to Asia. Its fronds, shiny and dark green, bring brightness to shaded flower beds for a good part of the year, as they are evergreen in regions with mild winters and rather constant temperatures. The Cyrtomium fortunei, also known as "fortune holly fern" is a very decorative terrestrial and evergreen fern that deserves to be better known. This perennial, native to Japan, produces its tough fronds, divided into toothed leaflets at the top, of a pretty, matte green that brightens shaded areas and cool rockeries. Cyrtomiums thrive in sheltered locations with indirect sunlight, in humus-rich, rich, slightly acidic soil, but with proper drainage.
