Basil (Osimum basilicum in Latin) is an annual herbaceous plant cultivated in the herb garden for its fragrant leaves, which are widely used in Italian cuisine. Just one leaf in a dish, and it's a ray of sunshine before summer. A basil plant on the kitchen windowsill is already a tribute to Mediterranean or, depending on the variety (e.g. Thai Basil) to Asian cuisine. Sowing takes place from March to May, directly in the ground or in a pot in a bright, sheltered place but not in direct sunlight. Sowing can be staggered for a longer harvest. Basil cannot tolerate drought. It is reputed to aid digestion and has hypoglycemic properties.
