The sacred bamboo or Nandina domestica is a shrub with remarkable, evergreen foliage that changes throughout the seasons. Nandina blooms in summer and then becomes covered in bright red berries that last into late winter. Nandina thrives in light shade, as well as in rich, loose, deeply worked soil. It requires little maintenance, just prune the bare stems to ground level in spring.
