Gymnocarpium dryopteris is a very pretty little ground cover fern better known as the oak fern. It is found in Europe, in high-altitude undergrowth, where it grows in cool and shaded environments, on humus and sand-rich soil. It's a pleasant surprise to see its lovely spring green velvety fronds emerge from the ground in late winter, increasing in number each year. Its vigorous and wandering rhizome allows it to gradually colonize the soil without becoming uncontrollable. Perfect for bringing a little light under trees, this small botanical fern is easy to acclimate to our gardens, when the conditions are right for it. It is perfect in a naturalistic-inspired ensemble.
