The Aquilegia or Columbine is a perennial and hardy plant. Columbines have a great diversity of flowers and colours depending on the species and varieties. They will bring lightness and whimsy to the mixed borders planted in many garden areas, leaving a 20 cm (8in) space around each plant. Plant them in beds, slopes, rockeries, and woodland edges, depending on the species. Columbines adapt to all moist soil types and thrive in any exposure, with a preference for partial shade.
