Mediterranean spurges, or Euphorbia characias, are evergreen perennials with the habit of a small shrub, invaluable in dry gardens, rockeries and sunny slopes. Their glaucous foliage, blue-green or variegated depending on the variety, remains through winter, then they offer a long spring flowering in chartreuse green. They thrive in full sun, in well-drained, stony, poor or chalky soil and tolerate very dry summers.
The botanical form Euphorbia characias subsp. characias is a plant of the garrigue perfectly adapted to dry Mediterranean gardens. The more imposing Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii is eye-catching in spring, when its yellow-green inflorescences dominate its blue-green foliage. The variegated varieties are decorative even when not flowering: ‘Tasmanian Tiger’ combines green leaves edged with cream with light bracts, while ‘Silver Swan’ offers a more compact, very silvery silhouette, decorative at the edge of a bed on gravel. 'Black Pearl’, with green flowers and a very dark centre, is a particularly attractive and contrasting variety.
