The Ivy or Hedera helix are sturdy creeping or climbing plants that bear triangular, green or variegated leaves. They can reach a height of 10 m (33ft). Native to Europe, Ivies are very hardy and can become invasive. Theflowering produces small black fruits in winter that are appreciated by birds. They like any fresh and humus-rich soil, even quite consistent or limestone, they also need to be sheltered from the burning sun. Variegated varieties require filtered light. Green Ivies withstand very dense shade well. Pruning involves rejuvenating the base by removing old branches. Ivies can be used as wall coverings as well as ground covers or to dress up an old tree. Be careful as its climbing roots can damage walls with loose rubble or damaged plaster.
