Native to the United States, Penstemons are floriferous perennial shrubs with long, green, and evergreen leaves. Just like their cousins the foxgloves, they bear tubular flowers in shades of pink, purple, yellow, red, white, or burgundy, depending on the varieties, often maculated or spotted inside the corolla. They flower abundantly and continuously from the beginning of summer until autumn, provided that faded flower stalks are regularly cut. They are sun-loving plants and thrive in warm and rich, well-drained soils, but appreciate moisture during their flowering period. While they are hardy on the coast, in other areas they should be planted in the warmest and sunniest spots in the garden. Just like grasses, the stems should be cut back to 15-20cm (6-8in) from the ground in early spring, never before! In these pages, you will find a selection of Penstemon seeds to be sown in trays from February to April.
