The Hemerocallis or Daylilies are low-maintenance perennial plants with multiple colours (white, pink, orange, yellow, red...). They can grow almost anywhere and bloom from June to September in flower beds, rock gardens, and borders. To ensure good flowering, they need at least six hours of sunlight. Known as "Daylilies," their bright flowers only last a short time but are constantly renewed by a clump of ribbon-like, arched leaves. Planting should be well thought out as they should remain in place (lifespan approximately 10 years). Hemerocallis prefer deep and moist soils, good garden soil is sufficient. Fertilizer is not necessary as it promotes leaf growth rather than flower growth. Once the flower stalks appear, adding some compost at the base of each clump and regular watering will guarantee a spectacular bloom. Watch out for slugs and snails that feed on young shoots! Sprinkling ash or sawdust around the plants forms a protective barrier. Hemerocallis are edible and used in Japanese cuisine. They consume fried buds or raw flowers in salads.
