Welsh onions, Scallions, Green shallots, or Spring onions are aromatic and seasoning plants cultivated for their bulbs and leaves, which have a milder taste than onions or shallots but stronger than chives. They have a clumping habit and produce hollow, cylindrical leaves. They thrive in sun and semi-shade, and grow well in moderately rich soil. They are small perennials cultivated for two to three years after which they becomes exhausted. Sowing takes place in September and October. Place them alongside parsnips and celery in your vegetable patch, which will protect them from carrot fly. Welsh onions and particularly Chinese Welsh onions are widely used in Asian or Caribbean cuisine.

You'll love them!
