All our varieties of opium poppy seeds. This very ornamental opium poppy (Papaver somniferum, Papaver somniferum var. nigrum) offers large, crumpled cup-shaped, single or double flowers, in pastel or bright shades. The variety ‘Black Paeony’ is probably the best known, with its very dark, almost black double flowers. ‘Lilac Pompom’ has a dense centre of lilac petals, while ‘Applegreen’ displays original and rare, creamy green pom-pom flowers with pale green highlights. The large flower of the ‘Laciniatum Scarlet’ poppy has deeply cut, bright red petals. The decorative seed heads that follow the flowering of the opium poppy are widely used in dried bouquets.
Opium poppy is an easy-to-grow annual in full sun, on well-drained, rather poor, even chalky soil. Sow directly in place in spring or late winter in mild regions. It is generally undemanding but dislikes very clayey soil and wet soils in winter. Remove faded flowers or let the seeds ripen if you want self-sowing.
Beware, the opium poppy contains powerful alkaloids: it is cultivated here solely for ornamental purposes.
