Our range of Ajugas or creeping bugles is adapted to clay soils, heavy soils that remain moist in winter and summer. The Ajuga reptans, the creeping bugle, is among the best ground cover perennials to plant in heavy soils, becoming muddy in rainy weather but retaining moisture longer in summer. There are many varieties of creeping bugles, offering dark foliage ('Black Scallop''Atropurpurea'), variegated ('Burgundy Glow'), multicoloured or golden ('Gold Chang'). The flowers of Ajuga reptans are mostly in shades of blue, but they can also be white in the A. reptans 'Alba' or pink in the 'Rosea' form, for example. All these plants have glossy, evergreen leaves that are decorative in all seasons. Thanks to their stolons, these perennials spread rapidly and form dense carpets that come to life with beautiful upright spikes in spring. Small and very hardy plants, essential in cool, moist, even clayey soils, creeping bugles thrive in the shade of the undergrowth.
