Description

Erica carnea 'Rosalie' is a variety of Winter Heather characterised by a rather upright habit, magnificent flowering in bright pink, and fresh green foliage that takes on bronze hues in winter. Its main attraction is its long flowering period that brightens the garden from winter to spring. This heather also has the advantage of tolerating limestone soils very well. With its attractive cushion-like habit, 'Rosalie' is perfect for rockeries or as ground cover between shrubs in well-drained soil.

Erica carnea 'Rosalie' belongs to the Ericaceae family. It is one of the many descendants of Erica carnea native to limestone Alps. The plant forms an undershrub with a rounded and flattened habit, heavily branched, reaching 30 cm to 40 cm (11.8 in to 15.7 in) in height and 40 cm (15.7 in) in width. Its growth is quite slow, with a lifespan of around fifteen years. In winter and until spring, from January-February to May, it produces delicate small urn-shaped flowers in bright pink, with prominent stamens and bronze punctuations. The bell-shaped flowers are arranged in clusters 5 cm to 10 cm (2 in to 3.9 in) long at the tips of leafy stems. The flowering is nectar-rich, providing a valuable source of pollen and nectar for bumblebees, hoverflies, and other bees in early spring. The evergreen foliage is composed of very narrow and erect leaves, vivid green in colour, taking on bronze hues in cold weather.

Erica carnea 'Rosalie' will find its place as ground cover at the base of deciduous or evergreen shrubs, where it appreciates light shade. It can also be used in rockeries, alongside alpine plants. It can be grown both in urban and rural areas. Counted among the best garden plants, it can be planted as a standalone specimen, as well as in a heather garden to create a mosaic of colours, in borders and in pots.

While heathers, especially the genus Erica, are often associated with the wet Atlantic heathlands of Brittany, Ireland, or Scotland, there are also heathers adapted to dry climates and limestone soils, such as those found in Mediterranean regions. However, one of the richest areas for heathers is located far away, in South Africa. In the Cape region, there is a vegetation formation on acidic soil, similar to Mediterranean scrub vegetation, called Fynbos, which includes nearly 625 heather species out of the 740 species that exist worldwide.

Planting and care

Erica carnea 'Rosalie' prefers soil that is not too rich in organic matter. It adapts very well to poor terrains. The soil should be light, sandy, slightly acidic, neutral to limestone, moist but well-drained. Plant in autumn or spring, without burying the collar too deeply. This plant appreciates non-burning full sun or partial shade. During the first two years, carefully weed around the base. Adapted to dry environments, the roots of this heather are highly ramified in the soil and prevent, once well established, the establishment of other species nearby. In case of prolonged drought, mulch around the base to retain some moisture. Erica can be susceptible to phytophthora (root rot), pythium and rhizoctonia during hot and humid periods.
