Great product. Beautiful flowers with a very original colour that brightened up my planters all summer long without any special maintenance despite the weird weather this year (39°C at the beginning of August followed by heavy rains and strong winds...). I planted the young plants upon receipt in small pots, took care of them a bit until their final placement in early May. I will do it again next year, trying out other colours of these petchoas.

Description
Petunia SuperCal Red Maple is adorned from spring to autumn with fairly large scarlet flowers on a regular plant with a well-rounded and dense habit. Like other hybrids called 'Petchoa', it combines the qualities of petunias and calibrachoas, better known as Million Bells. This quite early selection has beautiful, solid and vibrant funnel-shaped flowers. This essential plant for borders and containers is less water-demanding than traditional petunias, resistant to rain and heat and almost maintenance-free.
X Petchoa are recent horticultural hybrids resulting from cross-breeding between petunias and Calibrachoa. These are tender perennials often grown as annuals. These two very similar types of plants differ, however, in a few morphological characteristics: Calibrachoa flowers are smaller, their growth habit is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, theare smaller and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and probably descend from an Argentine species called Petunia integrifolia. The improved SuperCal series stands out for its good resistance to weather, heat and cold, with little impact on the plant's beauty.
The "SuperCal Red Maple" variety quickly forms a dense clump, on average 45 cm (18in) tall and 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) in diameter. Its flexible stems are covered along their entire length with small lanceolate, evergreen, velvety, non-sticky, dark green leaves that beautifully enhance its flowers. The single flowers are red and velvety. The tireless flowering lasts from May until the first frost. The flowers measure 6-7 cm (2-3in) in diameter and bloom abundantly in the axils of the leaves, covering the faded flowers that fall off on their own.
x Petchoa SuperCal Red Maple is ideal in hanging baskets, containers, or pots, but its heat tolerance and excellent flower durability in the rain also allow it to be used in the ground, where it forms very attractive borders in sunny flowerbeds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by other varieties with complementary colors (Yellow Caramel, Cinnamon, Pearl White), in troughs, flower pots, or planters on the terrace, balcony, or patio. Hybrid petunias are also good greenhouse plants. Their association with verbenas, lobelias, ipomoeas, and nemesias is remarkable. The choice is vast and allows for the imagination and tastes of each gardener, even novice ones.
Note: Attention, our plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (greenhouse, cold frame, etc.) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care
You can plant your SuperCal Red Maple petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, in soil enriched with compost, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. They will flower from May-June to October. Plant them in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-drained soil and they are sensitive to stagnant water. Do not overwater them at the beginning of the growing season, as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They are quite water-efficient but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.

- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
