The Osteospermum or Cape daisies, which are sensitive to temperatures below -5°C (23°F), are perennials typically grown as annuals. They are often confused with Dimorphoteca and have entire, narrow, lobed leaves, and delicate flower heads in shades of white, pink, purple, or orange. Highly floriferous from May to October, Osteospermum can reach heights of 10 to 60cm (4 to 24in), depending on the species. Also known as "rain daisies," these plants prefer light, well-drained soils that are not overly rich, and they thrive in sunny locations. If there is insufficient light, the flowers will close. Osteospermum are used as borders, in flower beds, rock gardens, and containers, often alongside succulent plants.
