Organdy begonias are ideal for borders or pots due to their compact habit. They have an early and endless flowering season, and their vegetation is resistant to bad weather. These plants showcase a beautiful range of soft or vibrant colours, have single or double corollas, and come with varied foliage in green, bronze, chocolate, or purple shades. As semperflorens hybrids, these begonias prefer shade or partial shade.

Description

The Begonia semperflorens 'Organdy' brings together different varieties of annual begonias chosen from the 'Super Olympia' and 'Cocktail' series, appreciated for their excellent performance in flower beds, their attractive ball-shaped habit, as well as their exceptionally long flowering period. This selection offers a beautiful range of colours, both for the flowers and the foliage. Like all semperflorens hybrids, 'Organdy' begonias prefer shade or partial shade, whether planted in the ground or in pots on the terrace or balcony.

The 'Organdy' Begonia is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the Begonia family. It is derived from the Begonia semperflorens, a hybrid between two species native to Brazil. This selection features plants that quickly reach 20 cm (7.9 in) in all directions and have a neat, compact, ball-shaped habit with shiny, rounded leaves. The stems are stout and fleshy; the leaves can be fresh green, bronze, or chocolate-coloured. Appearing from May to June on the earliest varieties, lasting until the first frost, the flowers are single, semi-double or double. They range in colour from white to pink and red, sometimes orange. Begonias are monoecious, meaning they bear both male and female flowers.

Organdy Begonias are perfect for brightening and bringing life to shady areas, but can also be placed in partial shade. They can be used in flower beds, in vases, on balconies, or in large flower pots. They create remarkably colourful ground covers when mixed with different varieties. They pair well with light foliage and flower plants, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, and also with petunias.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2 °F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has definitely passed.

Planting and care

The 'Organdy' Begonia is a flowering plant that blooms from May until the first frost. To grow it properly, use light, well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of humus. The soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged. Place the plant in full sun or partial shade. Water it moderately, as too much water can harm it. Fertilise it once a week during the growing season for intense flowering. Watch out for snails and slugs that like to eat young plants. Semperflorens Begonia can get powdery mildew and botrytis, so take precautions to avoid these diseases. Begonia is sensitive to frost, so it can't tolerate freezing temperatures. It's often grown in containers that can be taken indoors in greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first sign of frost.
