Description

The Asian hybrid lily 'Salmon Tiger' has splendid flowers. The slightly recurved petals display delicate colours, light salmon pink and in the centre with a cream yellow heart, speckled with fine brown spots. This superb lily is rare and difficult to find for sale. However, it is easy to grow and vigorous. Its magnificent flowering takes place in early summer.

Lilies belong to the Liliaceae family. There is a classification of horticultural lilies that includes 9 divisions, 'Salmon Tiger' is classified in the group of Asiatic hybrids. It forms a stem 100 cm (39in) tall wich will have numerous flowers of 10 cm (4in) in diameter, with slightly recurved petals, as early as June.

This lily thrives in humus-rich soil and does not like chalky soil, so it is important to ensure good drainage as it does not like heavy soils. You can plant lilies in perennial beds as they like having their base in the shade and the perennials will help prevent the stems from bending in the wind. Lilies are ideal for borders, and of course for bouquets.

Planting and care

'Salmon Tiger' thrives in humus-rich soil and does not like limestone soils, ensure good drainage as it does not like heavy soils either. Plant it in full sun or partial shade, preferably in spring or October, with the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a layer of sand to prevent rot and slug attacks, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as the vegetation only starts in April. Stake the stems when they reach 30 cm (12in) high. If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them by hand, but be careful as they drop as soon as you touch them. After flowering, it is a good idea to cut off the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful during summer. Your lilies will be available from early October; plant them as soon as you receive them. This lily is also suitable for container gardening. Plant 1 to 5 bulbs in a deep pot, water them a little and place your pots in a frost-free location. Bring them out in spring and enjoy their beauty on your terrace!
