Thanks to the individuals (Alexandre for order preparation and K.M. from the shipping department), the bulbs received appear to be healthy. Planted near the 'Lolita Lempicka' rose, I am now patiently waiting for them to take root... (or not?)." Analysis: - "bulbes" is translated as "bulbs" - "rosier" is translated as "rose" - "reprise" is translated as "take root" - "(ou pas ?)" is translated as "(or not?)

Description

Oriental Lily 'Josephine' is a sumptuous variety, which produces impressively large flowers, also highly fragrant, in the second half of summer. Their wavy petals are gracefully curved, tender pink, crossed by an almost white midrib and delicately speckled with dark pink.  It is a precious yet vigorous lily that will faithfully flower in a flower bed, a pot or even a large rockery. Its flowers, borne by strong stems, will bring a touch of exoticism and charm to homemade bouquets.

The genus Lillium belongs to the lily family, its representatives are bulbous plants whose foliage disappears in winter. In spring, leafy stems emerge from the ground, which rise and form a narrow and very vertical clump. 'Josephine' is a horticultural hybrid introduced in 2010. It was obtained through the cross-breeding of various species native to the Far East. This plant will reach a height of about 1m (3ft) when in flower, and the clump will spread indefinitely over time, with the bulbs producing bulblets through vegetative multiplication. In August, umbels of flowers appear, directed outwards, well displayed. They are trumpet-shaped and very wide, measuring up to 25 cm (10in) in diameter, and pleasantly fragrant. These imposing corollas are pale pink and white with satin highlights, heavily spotted with deep pink. The stamens carry cinnamon to brown pollen when ripe, completing the very fresh harmony of colours. The strong stems are covered with alternate, dark green, shiny and lanceolate leaves.

Oriental lilies do not like chalky, poorly drained and heavy soils, they are a little more difficult to grow than Asiatic lilies if the conditions are not met. You can grow them with perennial plants as they like to have their feet in the shade and the perennials will help prevent the stems from bending in the wind, or simply under the weight of the flowers. 'Josephine' is perfect for growing in containers, which can be placed on the terrace, near entrances, or in high-traffic areas to enjoy its exotic and fragrant flowers up close. This lily is also ideal in a low shrub bed, and of course as a cut flower. Grow it with compact hydrangeas, pieris, Chinese azaleas or dwarf rhododendrons, in a large ericaceous bed.

Planting and care

'Josephine' does not like chalky, poorly drained, and heavy soils. Plant the bulbs in full sun, with the base in the shade, preferably in spring, 15 cm (6in) deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a layer of sand that will protect them from rot and slug attacks, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April. Stake them when the stems reach 30 cm (12in) high.

If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them by hand, but be careful as they drop as soon as you touch them.

After flowering, it is a good idea to cut the faded flowers halfway so that the bed remains beautiful during summer.

Tip for planting lilies in compact soil: The scaly bulbs of large lilies hate clay soils that suffocate them and cause rot. In Eastern Europe, the following technique is used to help these bulbs survive the winter. Plant them on 'benches' built above ground level. These benches are made of a layer of gravel, on which tightly packed branches are placed. Then cover everything with a thick layer of compost 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) thick. Plant the bulbs in the compost, on which you can also have a few ground cover plants crawling.

On the terrace, you can create sumptuous pots with lilies. Choose a container that is large and deep enough (at least 16 cm (6in) in diameter for 1 bulb). Fill it with a mixture of leaf compost and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs, 10-15 cm (4-6in) apart, then water abundantly. Place the pots in a cool room or outside once the frost has passed. The ambient temperature should be around 12°C (53.6°F). When the shoots appear, place the pot in a conservatory or a very bright room at a temperature of about 18°C (64.4°F). Apply liquid fertiliser twice a month until the flower buds appear.
