Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Someone Special' offers truly delightful flowers, round and medium-sized, but with a very lovely candy-pink colour tinged with salmon and soft pink on very wide and fleshy petals strongly embossed on the edges. The heart of the flower is occupied by a small bright yellow throat lightly infused with green. This medium-sized variety blooms in the middle of the season. It is also a problem-free perennial, whose luxuriant deciduous foliage is appealing even outside of the flowering period.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are hardy perennial plants with deciduous foliage, sometimes semi-evergreen. The 'Someone Special' variety grows in a fairly dense clump that reaches 60 cm (24 in) in height, with a relative spread of 50 cm (20 in). Daylilies tend to spread a bit when they like the terrain. The flowers measure about 12 cm (5 in) in diameter. The petals in this variety are very wide, thick and particularly fringed. Their colour is a warm pink, slightly more salmon towards the centre, and each one bears a light pink central line. Each flower lasts only a day, but flowering is continuously renewed over a beautiful period between June and July. The stems are robust and allow for beautiful bouquets. The linear foliage is abundant, bright green and deciduous. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade and sun. Some of them can be a bit invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Daylilies are often called the "perfect perennial plant" because of their vibrant colours and their ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to their lack of modesty: they display a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Someone Special' will perfectly blend into the decor of a romantic garden, along with small baby's breath and nigellas planted by its side. It pairs well with white yarrows and cinquefoils, or with corncockles, in a more rustic-inspired flower bed. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be provided, and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Someone Special' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it, and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive equally well in partial shade and in full sun: 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight will be sufficient for them. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. Do not plant them too closely to each other if you intend to install multiple plants as the spaces will quickly be filled up. For a few weeks after planting, it is advisable to keep the soil fairly moist. It is best to divide the clump in autumn after flowering.
