Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Iron Gate Glacier', a multiple award winner, stands out for the elegance of its large fragrant flowers, in shades of creamy white and very pale lemon yellow, with a small anise green heart. Its linear foliage forms a bright green cluster, forming a beautiful setting for this flowering that so closely imitates white lilies. This perennial, which is truly easy to grow in deep soil, is perfect for beginner gardeners as it withstands the test of time without maintenance, even in abandoned gardens.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are  hardy perennial plants whose foliage is deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen. The variety 'Iron Gate Glacier' was introduced to the market in 1971 and remains one of the most appreciated today for its fragrant, almost white flowers. It grows into a fairly dense clump that will reach 70 cm (28in) in height, with a relative spread of 50 cm (20in); daylilies tend to spread a little when they like the terrain. The flowers, of a good size, measure about 13-14 cm (5-6in) in diameter; the petals in this variety are lanceolate, delicately curved, slightly wavy, and thick-textured. Each flower lasts no more than a day, but the flowering continuously repeat flowers over a beautiful period between June and July. The stems are robust and bear many elongated buds. The linear foliage is abundant, very healthy, bright green and deciduous. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more opulent and floriferous in fresh soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade as in sun. Some are invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its bright colours and ability to tolerate any type of environment. Due to a lack of modesty, it has a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flowerbeds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Iron Gate Glacier' will integrate perfectly into the decor of a contemporary garden, alongside small grasses like Stipa tenuifolia planted by its side. It pairs well with yellow yarrows and potentillas or globe thistles in a more rustic-inspired flowerbed requiring little watering and maintenance. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or patio should be provided, choosing from among the dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Iron Gate Glacier' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial tolerates summer droughts and does not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it, and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive equally well in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. Do not plant them too close together if you plant multiple ones, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, keeping the soil sufficiently moist is advisable. Division is best done in autumn after flowering.
