Hemerocallis Joyful Occasion - Daylily

The Daylily or Hemerocallis Joyful Occasion is a pretty pink variety, quite compact, whose long summer flowering will liven up borders and sunny terraces. Its flowers are round, fleshy and fringed, a deep and fresh pink, finely veined with light red, traversed by a white midline and illuminated by an apricot-coloured base plunging into a small green heart. Its beautiful evergreen foliage, gathered in a fairly dense tuft, remains ornamental even outside flowering. Excellent perennial, easy to grow in all areas!

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the family Liliaceae. These are perennial and hardy plants whose foliage is deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen. The variety 'Joyful Occasion', obtained in 1976 and twice awarded, stands out for its pink colour, of great purity. This variety grows in a fairly dense tuft that will reach 45 cm (18in) in height, with a relative spread of 40 cm (16in); Hemerocallis has a tendency to spread a bit when they like the terrain. The flowers measure about 14 cm (6in) in diameter; the petals in this variety are both wide, thick and recurved, delicately wavy, with very undulate edges. Each flower lasts no more than a day, but the flowering renews continuously over a beautiful period between mid-June and July. The stems are robust and filled with numerous buds. The foliage, bright green, is linear and evergreen. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy rootsthat tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and more floriferous in fresh soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade and in the sun. Some can be invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours, ability to tolerate any type of environment, and beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Joyful Occasion' will be highlighted when planted as a border or in a large bed of perennials or annuals associated with white, fuchsia or blue flowers. Catmints, grasses, and beautiful foliage like fennel or lady's mantle will be good companions, as well as wildflowers; ornamental carrots, asphodels, chamomile, love-in-a-mist or Ammi visnaga will not overshadow the beauty of its flowers. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or patio should be provided and chosen from dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.
