Description

Heuchera Little Cuties Sugar Berry is a recent hybrid heuchera, with particularly compact growth, interesting for its delightful foliage, but also for its abundant flowering. Its leaves, initially silver veined with purple, turn pink and purple in summer. Its vibrant flowering takes the form of short spikes of pretty dark pink adorned with countless small white flowers. It will flower throughout the growing season when planted in a cool, humus-rich soil. With its small size and fruity colours, "Sugar Berry" is a gem for borders, but also for flower pots.

Developed by the American company Terra Nova Nurseries, Heuchera Sugar Berry is part of the "Little Cuties" series, characterised by a very compact habit particularly suitable for containers and rockeries, a long flowering period, and bold, vibrant colours. These plants can also be grown indoors, much to the delight of gardeners without a garden.

Heuchera 'Sugar Berry' belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. This variety is somewhat similar to 'Heuchera Sugar plum' in terms of its colour, but it is smaller. The plant forms a small spreading clump, 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) tall and 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in) wide for the foliage. The flower spikes, 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in) tall, emerge from June to September. The combination of the summer foliage colour, a rosy purple with silvery highlights, and the bicoloured pink and white flowering, forms a very successful combination. The leaves of this heuchera are small, lobed, rounded in shape, and strongly veined. The delicate and airy flowering is composed of small white bells arranged along an upright stem tinged with dark pink. This plant has a shallow root system. The foliage remains in winter.

Heuchera 'Sugar Berry' can be planted in the ground in a border, in a shaded and cool rockery, or in a pot. In a row at the front of a flower bed or along a path, this heuchera will bring dynamism to the garden. Pair it with dwarf hostas, carex, and small ferns for a wild effect. It also makes a good companion for shrubs and dwarf roses, planted at the edge of undergrowth. Lastly, it makes an ideal ground cover, with remarkable colours. Pair this heuchera with blue flowers, the only hue it truly lacks, and it will be a perfect complement. This little heuchera is an ideal plant for filling your pots, containers, and flower beds.

Planting and care

Heuchera 'Sugar Berry' settles in the ground or in a container in spring or autumn. It prefers shaded or semi-shaded locations and moist, well-drained soil. Therefore, make sure to water it if the summer following its installation is particularly dry, or mulch the base.

Arid situations are not suitable for it at all. It can tolerate sun (not too intense) or heat if its roots are kept in moist soil.

Maintenance is limited to cleaning the foliage a little at the end of winter if it has dried out.
