Description

This Butterfly Meadow mix is a selection of wild perennial and annual flowers, chosen for their particularly nectar-rich blooms or their foliage loved by certain caterpillars. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place in spring, in well-prepared and loosened soil, in full sun or partial shade. The meadow thus created will flower for at least two years, from spring to summer, providing a true refuge for biodiversity.

This selection consists of 23 species of annual and perennial plants that are fast-growing, hardy, and easy to grow. The annuals will flower 6 to 8 weeks after sowing, while the perennials will produce their first flowers from the following spring. Some, especially among the annuals, easily naturalise through spontaneous self-seeding in ordinary and well-drained soil. One seed box can cover up to 200 square metres. The plants vary in height from 40 to 80 cm (16 to 32in).

Sample composition: Agrostemma githago, Trifolium repens, Onobrychis sativa, etc.

It has become very popular to plant wildflower meadows. They bloom throughout the entire summer season, promoting biodiversity and needing very little care: simply water only if the weather is very dry, and cut down to 10-20 cm (4-8in) above the ground in autumn. Ideal for adding colour and life to a sunny area, this Butterfly Meadow mix will be particularly appreciated by butterfly enthusiasts. It will also attract bees near fruit trees or in the vegetable garden, promoting pollination and fruit production.

Planting and care

Sowing: from March to early June

Turn over the soil. Depending on the surface, you can use a rototiller or agricultural equipment. • Refine, rake, level, and remove stones and weeds. • Mix the contents of the packet with an equal volume of dry sand to achieve a better distribution of the seeds. • Sow by broadcasting on the surface as if sowing a lawn. • Roll or compact the soil to bring the seeds into contact with the ground. • Water and keep moist until germination.

Quantity: sow around 2.5 g per 1 square metre.

Examples:

For 100 m²: weigh out 250 grams
For 200 m²: sow the entire box

To maintain your flowering meadow the following year, scythe at the end of flowering (late September or early October), and then mow without the grass box, to 10 cm (4in) above the ground.
