Description

Bee-friendly Fallow Flowers is a selection of hardy perennials and annuals, chosen for their honey-rich and nectar-rich flowering. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place in spring, in well-prepared and loosened soil, in the sun. The meadow thus created will flower for at least two years, from spring to summer, also providing an excellent refuge for biodiversity.

This selection consists of 31 species of annual and perennial plants that are fast-growing, hardy, and easy to grow. Annuals will flower 6 to 8 weeks after sowing, while perennials will produce their first flowers from the following spring. This selection offers beautiful flowering in the second year. Some species, particularly among the annuals, easily naturalise through spontaneous sowing in ordinary and well-draining soil. A box of seeds can cover up to 600 square metres. The size of the plants varies between 30 and 80 cm (12 and 32in) in height.

Sample composition: Cosmos bipinnatus, Centaurea cyanus, Echium plantagineum, Lotus corniculatus, etc...

It has become very popular to plant wildflower meadows. These flowers will bloom throughout the entire warm season, reducing the need for mowing and promoting biodiversity, while needing very little care. Simply water if the weather is very dry and mow to 10-20 cm (4-8in) above the ground in autumn. Ideal for adding colour and life to a sunny area, this Bee-friendly Fallow Flower mix will be particularly useful for the beekeeper who owns a few hives. It will also attract bees near fruit trees or in the vegetable garden, promoting pollination and fruit production.

Planting and care

Sowing: from March to early June

Turn the soil. Depending on the surface, you can use a cultivator or agricultural equipment.

Refine, rake, level, remove stones and weeds.

Mix the contents of the packet with an equal volume of dry sand to achieve a better distribution of the seeds.

Sow by broadcasting on the soil surface as if sowing a lawn.

Roll or compact the soil to bring the seeds into contact with the ground.

Water and keep moist until germination.

Sow approximately 0.8g per m²
Examples:

• 300 m2: weigh out 240 grams
• 600 m2: sow the entire box

Cultivation:

To maintain your flowering meadow the following year, scythe at the end of flowering (late September or early October), and then mow again leaving the grass box off, to 10cm (4in) above the ground.
