Description

The Aton Basil is a 40 cm (16in) tall herbaceous condiment plant. It is a variety with large leaves, productive, with a compact habit: ideal for pots. It is cultivated for its oval leaves with a powerful and penetrating fragrance that are consumed raw, finely chopped on salads. Sowing period from March to April for a harvest 3 months later.

Originally from tropical regions of Asia and Africa, Basil forms a plant that reaches, depending on the varieties, between 30 and 50 cm (12 and 20in) in height. It has upright, ramified stems with a square section like most Lamiaceae. It is an aromatic plant whose leaves, fresh or dried, are widely used in salads, marinades or in pesto to accompany pasta, meat or fish.

The use of basil in the Mediterranean basin dates back to Antiquity. For the Romans, this plant was the emblem of lovers, while for the Greeks, it symbolized hatred and misfortune! Basil is a condiment plant used to flavor and enhance dishes. Rich in essential oil, basil has soothing, anti-inflammatory and stimulating properties.

Basil will require a supply of well-decomposed compost (3 kg/m²) in late autumn or early spring.

Harvest: Between July and October, basil is harvested as needed and as it develops.

Storage: Basil can be stored in a glass filled with water in the refrigerator for a few days. It can also be dried in the shade and stored in an airtight jar, but unfortunately, it loses some of its fragrance.

Gardener's tip: Carry out regular weeding and hoeing. Pinch the flowering shoots so that new shoots develop. The smell of its leaves repels mosquitoes.

Planting and care

Sowing and maintenance:

Basil likes a fresh and loose soil, rich in humus. This plant also needs a semi-shaded exposure to grow well. Basil is sensitive to direct sunlight as it tends to burn the leaves. Basil is a plant that can be grown in the vegetable garden, but it adapts very well to a pot in a conservatory or on a balcony.

Sowing: It is done in spring, in the months of March, April, and May, directly in place. A well-aerated sowing is done in a flat furrow about 10 cm (4in) wide and 2 cm (1in) deep. The rows should be spaced 25 cm (10in) apart. Cover the seeds with the soil pushed aside along the furrow, then water. Germination takes between 10 to 15 days. As soon as the first plants appear, a light thinning out is done. The more staggered the sowing, the longer the harvesting period will be. Sowing can be done in a bucket and then transplanted as soon as the plant reaches 10 cm (4 to 6 leaves) in height. Basil can be kept in a pot to be available in the kitchen if it is bright.

Maintenance: Basil requires regular watering (or preventive mulching) when the soil dries out. It is the lack of water (water stress) that can cause basil to go to seed. Pinch off the inflorescences as soon as they appear to promote leaf production. Basil is susceptible to powdery mildew, gray rot, and aphids. To combat rot and mildew, reduce watering and thin out the planting. For aphids, you can treat the plants with a mixture of water and olive oil.
